Mr. Starr makes me want to revisit the route of the Old Spanish Trail as well as the Applegate. I want to again see Monterey’s presidio and the site of our state capitol in Benicia. I need to see the Mount Wilson observatory and find my grand dad’s resting sport at Forest Lawn. I want to shake hands with Fremont and Carson and Bidwell and Arnold Schwarzenegger.Kevin Starr’s well-told story of California makes me want to do all these things. Reading like an action/adventure novel in places, his history has proven to be both a pleasant departure from current events and a bit of an explanation of them.

This book has a lot of comprehensive information about California history but as others have mentioned it is extremely dry. Reading this book has exhausted me and I'm generally a very good reader of what others consider to be dull materials. Along with the helpful information I feel that the author includes too many irrelevant details and asides about historical figures that he only mentions once. All in all though it is a nice over view I would prefer a more in-depth analysis of each topic. I feel like too much is glossed over so nothing really creates much of a lasting impression. This book has throughly irritated me if I'm being honest.

I just finished this book and really enjoyed its rollercoaster ride through California history. Starr has a good sense of how to contextualize topics that helps one see California from many views. As an example, he takes California's labor and union history starting with its earliest days up to near modern times, all in a swoop, but in a way that helps one better understsand both labor and union and California. He does similar journeys for other topics like California art and literature. Sometimes California can be such a grand topic that it is hard to grasp its true shape and contours. Starr does an excellent job of giving one person's summary of it, and helps to make the subject more easily graspable. It may not be for everyone, but I recommend Starr's California

This book is highly recommend to all the people of California. It is an amazing book that expertly tells the history of the amazing State of California. He was an only child for many years, born and raised in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburg. His family was very wealthy, owning local companies, and were liberal in their outlook. His mother, in particular, was very, very charitable in the community and both parents encouraged young Fred in his artistic interests. Fred went through a typical adolescence as a rich kid in a small town, complete with the embarrassment that age and wealth bring. He went to Dartmouth for two years - enduring endless partying in the wilds of New Hampshire by others - before transferring to Rollins College in Florida. He found a ready-made community of other music majors. He soon knew he wanted to combine music with the teaching of children. He met his wife, Joanne, at Rollins. He soon moved into the new medium of television and soon found his place. And he was perfect for public television, where he found a home after disagreeing with the monetizing of children's TV.Fred Rogers came from a religious family. They had long been active in the Presbyterian Church and Fred eventually became a Presbyterian minister. Reading Maxwell King 's biography of Fred Rogers (frequently with tears in my eyes), I wondered what words Mr. Rogers would have for us in a world characterized by intolerance, violence (much of it committed against the young), and a lack of authenticity. I am grateful for the opportunity to be immersed in the life, the work, and the legacy of the man behind the puppets that I enjoyed watching as a young child--full disclosure: as a young Pittsburgher. This is the man who wrote on the back of photos of himself that I picked up for my sons at a conference keynoted by his executive producer, and took with me to Pittsburgh Theological Seminary to have him autograph when I heard he was in the continuing education class after mine, "Through the kindness of your dad." I learned so much about his history and his connections thanks to King's thorough research, and will be proud to continue delighting (or distressing) friends, family, and neighbors with my almost-daily renditions of "It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood" as I walk out the backdoor, regardless of the weather, and into a world made better because Fred McFeely Rogers was (and continues to be) part of It.

Anyone who is not too old for apple juice and cookies is not too old for Mister Rogers! I simply could not put this excellent biography down! Mister Rogers' core virtue is compassion. King shows how Mister Rogers treats children with the utmost respect, but far more than a children's television host, Mister Rogers was a brilliant musician, playwright, and caring pastor. I was amazed that this sweet man avoided negativity even when presenting things about which he strongly disagreed. For example, in a Christmas show, he, as the writer, displays a dislike for the song "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" by having Santa tell Daniel Tiger that not a spy, and that good people are not always good - they only try to be good. Through Mister Rogers' example, I myself try to be good. As I reflect on my own childhood memories of television, I think of the other men on the shows I watched: Gomez Addams was handsome and funny, but we never see him as a friend - we only see him with his family. Gordon on Sesame Street was with his television neighbors, but even when off-duty, he could not stop being a teacher - it was important for him to teach children, for example, the alphabet. As for Bozo, whom I never liked, we see him only at work as a clown - and King points out that Mister Rogers was against "clowns and balloons" being presented to children in their shows because children deserve far more than that - they deserve love and respect. Mister Rogers alone provides children with what they - and adults - need the most: unconditional love. King presents Mister Rogers as the loving and compassionate neighbor whom everyone wants to have as a neighbor, and through King's book, I am trying very hard to be that sort of person.

Yeah, I know, it's a kid's book but in for a penny, in for a pound as I have read all the rest so had to grab this. One of the funnier ones and since it is easy for me to identify with a middle schooler heading off for summer camp even though it has been over 50 years, the book brought back the flashes of angst, humor, embarrassment and fun of my attending Boy Scout camp back in the 50's in NH. A clever, well written and illustrated series. Probably could have left out the pet pig part. Other than that, fun mind candy - give it to your kids when you are done!

I read the entire Diary of a Wimpy Kid series in one week to date while recovering from an accident, so I'll do a blanket comment on the series on this one. The dialogue is believable as being written by a kid Greg's age. He's got a good heart, but he's flawed in a lot of ways too. He's under constant torment from wanna-be rock star older brother Rodrick, and overshadowed by pampered, precocious younger brother Manny who calls him "Bubby" at the worst possible moments. Best friend Rowley is a well-traveled, clueless only child who good naturedly goes along with most of Greg's schemes; Greg dismisses him by saying things like "I don't know why we're even friends" and "I guess that's why I put up with him" but on at least two occasions when he has upset Rowley to the point where they're not speaking, Greg misses him terribly and ends up going out of his way to reconcile with him. Greg wants to be popular but struggles with his ordinariness. But that is what makes Greg so relatable: his ordinariness. He's not the best looking, the brightest, the most talented, or the most anything. His deadpan, wry sense of humor made me laugh out loud several times, and I am well past the intended age group the book was written for. I hope Mr. Kinney takes Greg past middle school and beyond: I know I will be reading.

I liked this book because it was funny and how a kid gets into a car crash with his grandfather watching him it was hilarious and I hope Jeff Kenney writes more books good job Jeff Kenny keep diary of a wimpy kid series going 😁

My son is an 11 yr old, 6 grader who has dyslexia and struggles with reading..needless to say reading is not his favorite subject.However, he LOVES LOVES LOVES the Diary of a wimpy kid books. This latest one Old school he read in 1 day..YES 1 whole day..When done reading all he had to say while beaming ear to ear was "I love this author".. I thought it was so cute.I TOTALLY RECOMMEND the entire series..5 stars!Mr. Jeff Kinney, I don't know how fast you can write but I so hope you're working on the next one..I need you.To have struggling readers highly engaged in a book is truly AMAZING... Thank You!

My daughters get excited when a new Diary of a Wimpy Kid come out and when I saw this book I immediately bought it. This was the first series my 13 year old started reading on her own. She never was interested in reading until she started reading this series and read the book within two days. She told me that the books are funny and she can relate with them. This book Middle School is the dumbest idea ever invented and right now my daughter agrees. My 10 year old just started on the series and she likes the books too. I am happy that this book will keep my girls attention and will go in their book collections.

What's not to love about the wimpy kid books!?? My grandsons are crazy about the series and always have a hard time waiting for the next book to come out! They have the entire set, and both have this latest book because neither could wait to read it while the other brother was reading! How wonderful that these books trump video games! You probably didn't think that was possible! Imagine showing 9 & 11 year old boys a book, and having them jump up and race to be the first in the family to dive into Greg Hefley's latest quagmires! I'm telling you, when that happens, you've got to duck quicklytwo, or have books available! Even this grandma gets a kick out of reading the books, but please don't tell my boys! They might think I was "cool" or whatever! We certainly wouldn't want that!

Both of my kids love these books! My daughter is 13, but she has been reading them for a couple of years. What's even better about purchasing these books is the fact that she WILL re-read them! She shares little bits of the books with me when she finds an extra-funny part, and I have to admit, they are pretty funny. My son is 8 and he laughs out loud while reading any of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book. They are a must-have on road trips or when staying overnight at the grandparents.

I am reviewing this on behalf of my 10 year old son who really doesn't love to read. Do you have a child like this? If so, buy this book. It was such a treat to watch him curl up into bed at night and lie down to read this book! He was obsessed with it. I don't really care of some of the writing can be "snarky" or whatever, because my son was actually loving a book. That is what is important to me--can we find books that he likes reading? We want him to love reading, and if this is what it takes, well, then we're IN!
